Doug Aitken Workshop is seeking a Project Researcher based in Los Angeles to contribute to the development of new projects, from early conceptual research through to production. Projects will range from large-scale installations and sculptures to immersive experiences and multi-disciplinary artworks.
This role requires a deep understanding of visual culture, contemporary art, and material research, with a strong focus on materials and fabrication techniques. The ideal candidate will have expertise in materials used in art, sculpture, architecture, and construction, with the ability to think creatively about innovative applications. Candidates should be comfortable researching new materials and fabrication processes, finding novel ways to bring concepts to life in the physical world. This person will play a key role in bridging conceptual ideas with real-world execution, communicating with vendors, suppliers, stakeholders and project partners, working closely with the artist and fabrication team to develop new approaches to making and building.
Qualifications:
- Ability to conduct in-depth visual research to develop and refine project concepts.
- Excellent skills in sourcing reference imagery, materials, and production techniques to support project development.
- In-depth knowledge of materials and fabrication methods applicable to sculpture, installation, and architectural-scale works.
- Excellent skills in creating clear and compelling visual presentations.
- Communication and project management skills, communicating with fabricators, vendors, and production partners.
- Strong eye for composition, color, and materiality.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Minimum 2–3 years experience in a similar role within sculpture, fine art fabrication, or exhibition production, with strong knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques.
- Proficiency in Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign), and familiarity with 3D software (Rhino, Cinema 4D, or Blender) is a plus.
- A degree in Fine Arts, Architecture, or a related field is preferred.
